A Plea To All Startuppers - Keep It Simple

There seems to be a new “Ajax-driven Social Networking Mashup Widget” site popping up every 10 minutes these days. Apparently, it doesn’t take much to come up with one.
- 2 portions social network,
- 1 teaspoon each of video, blog and photo,
- A dash of tagging/sharing/rating, topped with a
- “My startup is different (no, really!) twist” and,
voila! a new site is born. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great 2.0 applications out there but I am just a big propagator of everything simple. Clean. Think Craigslist, not MySpace. Even though Craigslist comes in at #9 on the top trafficked sites in the US vs. the #3 ranked MySpace, how many users do you think get on craigslist and try to figure out how to turn off the annoying music?
There are a number of reasons why we love Craigslist and want to be like it when we grow up. My top 3 are:
- Their user-community is driven. May it be looking for your next job at Google or a casual encounter for the night, you are there with a purpose.
- The layout uses all but 1 image - its purple peace sign icon.
- And my favorite reason…it’s been around since 1995, or what I like to fondly call, the Web 1/4.0 days.
Don’t let your A.D.D. driven agenda fuel your desire to come up with a twist for your startup. For the sake of your users, keep it simple. Peace!
