The case of the missing iPhones

First off, I know it has been a while since my last post. I’ve been swamped with proposal deadlines, presentations and all other exciting things that keep a small business owner busy.

And secondly, although a little late, I thought this was an interesting little fact worth blogging about. AT&T reported a total of 146,000 total iPhones that got activated. But, according to Apple, they sold 270,000 units. Ok. So we have about a 124,000 iPhones floating around that have not been activated.

Hmmm. This prompted me to do my own sleuthing and here’s what I came up with:

  1. Jon Lech Johansen, of DeCSS fame, cracked the iPhone within days that unlocked WiFi and iPod features without activation. Ok, so I’m sure there would account for at least 10-15% of the missing phones. That is about 18,600 guys that paid $500 bucks for a 8GB iPod with WiFi.
  2. There are about 486 brand-new/unlocked iPhones on eBay. Let’s assume that eBay accounts for about 10% of all e-tailing sites. Another 5000 phones on such sites.
  3. Let’s throw in another 10,000 units that were bought as pre christmas/birthday/giveaway gifts.

Ok. There’s still a whole bunch missing. Maybe this took 90,000 takes to get right.

  1. These are phones not activated by Sat. night (30 hours after the iphone went on sale). Most could be from mail order. Apple started taking orders Friday night.
